Good morning, my fellow Miamians π¦©
I spent Friday, September 11 at the police memorial service at Tropical Park, alongside the mayor, Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz, and neighbors from across the county. When we say never forget, we don't mean the terrorists behind that villainous act. We mean the brave firefighters, police officers, and civilians who died that day, 25 years ago. That's who that day belongs to.
September has settled into its school-year rhythm, and this edition follows it straight into the IEP meeting. Florida's new law, HB 1279, puts missed-service transparency in writing, and 2 free trainings this week cover the rest: what to ask, what to expect, and how to walk in prepared.
Then the weekend takes over. This Saturday is the 3rd Saturday of the month, the one where free family days stack up across the county, from a sensory-friendly museum morning downtown to a basketball clinic for children with autism. Sunday cools off with an early 5K on the sand and a forest program for the littlest scientists. It's a full week, pick your spots.

New Florida law strengthens transparency for students with disabilities. School districts must notify parents within 10 school days when an IEP-related service is missed, explain why, and discuss a make-up plan. Parents can also request access to service provider logs or progress notes within 15 school days, and districts must inform parents of this right at each IEP meeting.
